Developer: Telltale Games | Publisher: Telltale Games | Platform Reviewed On: MacSimilarly to fighting games adventure games have made a comeback in the last five years. The company that has been leading this charge has been Telltale Games, but recently Telltale has been in a runt. Jurassic Park had its share of controversy, and it didn't favor so well in terms of reviews. The Walking Dead tries to reverse this bad luck, and if the first episode is any indication Telltale is well on their way to doing so.
You play as Lee Everett. Lee is on his way out of town when all hell breaks loose. For being a grown adult male Lee sure does have problems standing on his own two feet. Now that I think about it every characters seems to have problems helping themselves. Inabilities to protect oneself aside the games pacing is top notch. The game has a great balance of conversations, problem solving, tough choices and of course action.
Fans of the graphic novels and television show will feel right at home. The game’s cell shaded look gives you the feeling of the heavily inked pages of a comic book. I got sucked into the world. While playing I started thinking about the choices my Lee Everett would have made.
Instead of the usual adventure game mechanics the game is more focused on story building and the characters. The game uses a conversation tree, and how you respond to characters will determine their levels of trust. Don’t be too harsh or lie to a character because they will remember. Any little decision you make will branch the story. Too bad the story doesn't branch far. No matter the decision you make, the only thing that really changes are what character lives or dies, and how characters feel towards you.
A couple of times the game froze in the same place during the story. I had to re-install to get past that part. Also during the end scene there were some graphical errors. Besides that the game ran awesome on my MacBook Pro. While this is only part one of a five part series I feel strong for the upcoming episodes of The Walking Dead. With its great characters, strong stories, and ties to the books and show; The Walking Dead is a must own for zombie fans and fans of The Walking Dead franchise.
