• Nintendo Gamecube 10th Anniversary: 10 Games for 10 Years

It has been ten years since the launch of the Nintendo Gamecube and even though it may not of been the most remembered or the most revolutionary console ever made, it is still one of my favorites since this console has some of the best games around. Since this is the tenth anniversary of the Nintendo Gamecube, I thought I would make a general list of some best games (and some of my favorites) available for the Gamecube. These games in the list will be anything from exclusive Nintendo titles to ported and 3rd party games.

    Pikmin

When I first heard about Pikmin, I was a little skeptical at first site of the game, but when I played it, I was not disappointed. Pikmin was one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Gamecube and it is definitely one of the better games for the system. Pikmin is a real time strategy type of game where you play as Captain Olimar in a quest to find his missing ship parts that he lost when he crashed landed on an unknown planet. To help him in is quest, Olimar gets the help from the Pikmin, which are plant-like creatures that have many abilities. The core gameplay is centered around the Pikmin and this game makes great use of all the different types of Pikmin that are available. This game also has great graphics and a nice soundtrack to go with it. Pikmin is definitely one of the unique games that appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube and one of the Nintendo Franchises that continues to blossom to this day.
Another Great Pikmin Game to appear on the Nintendo Gamecube: Pikmin 2

    Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee is definitely one of the better multiplayer games for the Nintendo Gamecube and one of the better Gamecube games overall. Super Smash Bros. Melee really was amazing considering how much was added from the first Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo 64. One of the first things that stands out is the number of characters added to this game. Super Smash Bros. Melee added 14 characters to the original 12 to grand total of 26 playable characters. There were also a variety of stages to play on, both old and new and there were a variety of game modes added to this game, such as All Star Mode and Adventure Mode. Without a doubt, Super Smash Bros. Melee is one of the better multiplayer games ever released by Nintendo and definitely one of the better games for the Nintendo Gamecube.
Another Great Fighting Game that appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube: Soul Calibur 2

    Mario Kart Double Dash

Mario Kart Double Dash is one definitely one of my favorite racing games and one of the better Mario Kart games available. Mario Kart Double Dash was not just another Mario Kart to be released on the Nintendo Gamecube, as it added some cool new features that are only found in this Mario Kart game. The main new gameplay feature added to this Mario Kart was the addition of a second character to make teams of two instead of the just the single character. You can play as any combination of characters like Mario & Luigi to DK & Diddy Kong. There were also different Karts that you could use for the different weight classes, which was a first for the series. It is hard to say which is the best Mario Kart game ever released, since the series has games such as Mario Kart 64, which was always a classic multiplayer title for the Nintendo 64. Although, I would say that Mario Kart Double Dash for the Nintendo Gamecube is definitely one of the better games that this series has to offer.
Other Great Racing Games to appear on the Nintendo Gamecube: Kirby Air Ride, Sonic Riders, F-Zero GX

Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes

Even though it may be remembered more for the PS1, Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes is definitely a great remake of a classic title. Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes receives many upgrades and added features that the original game did not have. Upgraded graphics, character designs, cut scenes and updated gameplay mechanics that were used in the PS2 Titles (such as the first person view) really make this game great. Even the cut scenes were upgraded and showed what a total badass that Solid Snake can be. The only flaw with all these upgrades was the game seemed a little easier than the original. Although, that does not really hurt this game much. I would say that this is one of my favorite games from the Metal Gear series and definitely one of the better Nintendo Gamecube Titles available.

    Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door

Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door was second game in the Paper Mario series and by far the best one from the series. Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door is one of better RPG games available and one of my favorite Mario games every created. Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door did just about everything right in terms of being a sequel. This game built upon and greatly improved the Battle System that was introduced in the first Paper Mario game and added some nice new mechanics based of the gameís paper theme. The story that this game had to offer is definitely one of the better Mario stories for any Mario game. It also had a better graphics and presentation, along with a great soundtrack. Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door is definitely one of my top 5 RPGs of all time and one of my all time favorites from the Nintendo Gamecube.

    Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime is often regarded as one of the best games in the Metroid series, alongside other Metroid games like Super Metroid, and it may be the most revolutionary game ever released for the Nintendo Gamecube. It was the Metroid game that brought the entire Metroid series into 3D and the developers of Retro Studios certainly did a fantastic job. They were able to create a 3D Metroid game and retain all of the gameplay elements from the previous 2D Metroid that made the series great. The interesting story, classic soundtrack, and revolutionary gameplay really made Metroid Prime a must have game and staple for the other Metroid Prime games in the Prime series. Exploring the different areas and battling enemies was truly a great thing to experience in this game. When you take about great games for the Nintendo Gamecube and for Metroid games in general, Metroid Prime should definitely be in the discussion for being one of the best.
Another Great Metroid Game that appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube: Metroid Prime 2 Echoes

    Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Like some other games on this list, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle may not be most remembered for the Gamecube, but it is still one of the better Nintendo Gamecube games around. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is pretty much a simple port from the Sega Dreamcast. It really does not add anything to the Gamecube, except maybe a slight upgrade in graphics. Although, this does not mean this game isnít fun. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is often regarded as one of the better Sonic games, and for good reason. This game has many features to offer, such as multiple characters to play as, multiplayer, a good story, memorable soundtrack, and great gameplay. Sonic Adventure 2 has a good variety of gameplay elements, such as speed levels, treasure hunting, and battling mechs. Add all of these things together and you have a great Sonic Game. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is one of my favorite Sonic games, if not my most favorite, and definitely one of the better games on the Nintendo Gamecube.
Other Great Sonic Games to appear on the Nintendo Gamecube: Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog (Yes, I enjoyed Shadow the Hedgehog)

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess

Even though it is not really thought of being a true Gamecube Title with its appearance on the Wii, The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, in my opinion, was by far the best Zelda game to appear on the Gamecube. The Gamecube version of Twilight Princess is just as good as the Wii Version and has all of the features the Wii game has, minus the motion controls. The art style that this Zelda game had is definitely my favorite Zelda art style used and one of my favorite art styles ever used in a Nintendo game. The story that this game offered was very different than most Zelda games, since there is very little mention of the Triforce in Twilight Princess, and the soundtrack was also good and added a bit more of a serious and darker feeling to the game. Just about everything in Twilight Princess was done very well, in both the Gamecube and Wii versions. As I said in my review, if you are going to discuss what the best Zelda game is, you have to include Twilight Princess in the discussion.
Another Good Zelda Game that appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

    Skies of Arcadia: Legends

Skies of Arcadia: Legends, as some other games in this list did not make its first appearance of the Nintendo Gamecube, but it is still a Gamecube Title, so it deserves some mention in this list. When Skies of Arcadia was first released, it was for the Sega Dreamcast, which disappointed me at first, since I did not own a Dreamcast and Skies of Arcadia looked to be an amazing game. After the Dreamcast was taken down by the PS2, Sega ported several franchises to other game consoles and one of the ones that got ported to the Gamecube was Skies of Arcadia, now with the subtitle Legends. The Nintendo Gamecube version of Skies of Arcadia received many improvements that gamers complained about in the Dreamcast. Things such as shorter loading times, better graphics/character designs, more back story, and a smaller enemy encounter rate really made this game a gem title for the Gamecube. The only downside to this version was the quality of the soundtrack was downgraded slightly so they could fit this entire game on one disk. However, as great as this game is and what this version received will easily compensate for the soundtrack. Skies of Arcadia: Legends is definitely one of the best RPG games I have ever played, if not the best, and definitely one of my favorite Nintendo Gamecube Titles and one of my Top 20 games overall.

    Super Mario Sunshine

Ah, Super Mario Sunshine, the first game I ever played on the Nintendo Gamecube. Most people did not like this Mario game since most people did not like the idea of Fludd and some of his gameplay mechanics that came with it, like spraying water to defeat enemies and clean up graffiti. Although unlike most people, I really enjoyed this game and what it brought to the Mario series. It seemed like the Mario Bros. always had a machine to aid them in their adventures on the Gamecube (Luigiís Mansion). Super Mario Sunshine is definitely a unique platformer where you are aided by a device that sprays water instead of the traditional power-ups like the Fire Flower. The gameplay for the most part worked very well when it came to Fludd and offered some creative gameplay. The graphics for this game, I would say, were quite impressive for a game that was released early in the life of the Gamecube, as some of the levels like Noki Bay looked amazing. Other things such as the soundtrack for the game were also very well done and really fit the tropical island theme of the game. It may never be regarded as the best Mario game ever made, but Super Mario Sunshine was still a great game and one of the better ones for the Nintendo Gamecube.
Other Great Mario Games that appeared on the Nintendo Gamecube: Luigiís Mansion, Mario Party Series, Wario World

As I said, this is just a general list of ten of the better games that were released for the Nintendo Gamecube, as well as some of my favorite games for the system. There are still plenty of great games that I did not mention in this list that did come out for the Nintendo Gamecube, which just shows how great this console really was, even though it may not be the most revolutionary console ever released. Without a doubt, the Nintendo Gamecube is definitely one of my favorite gaming systems ever released and with games such as the ones mention in the list above, its not hard to see why.
